Rant Post: Gundam Build Fighters Try Island Wars

The much hyped follow-up to the popular Try Fighters (popular to Gunpla folks at least) is finally released on Youtube. An Image cap is available in Tag Hobby and Gundam Guy as well.

P-Bandai Kamiki Burning Gundam "hyper mode"
So what's this post about? It's a rant! A spoilery rant!
I won't go too much into detail as there are people who are much better in analyzing these things. So I'll just post the stuff that I liked and the stuff that felt off.

Quick plot summary for this though. Basically, Nils Nielsen from Yajima Trading is creating and testing a new form of Plavsky Particle. No clue on what makes it new though as it's not really elaborated. They just say that kits built for that particle reacts better. And that kit here is the Scramble Gundam. Anyway, the Try Fighters are invited (along with Minato, Shia and Gyanko) to become test pilots. Crystal goes out of control, Scramble Gundam has a mind of it's own and basically almost simulate the 1st Build Fighters last 3 episodes.

For the most part, it's more Build Fighters Try, execution-wise. From the suit mechanics perspective, they're overpowered as fuck. The opening fight alone between Gyanko's team and Try Fighters already hints of how overpowered their suits are. Also it's moved from realistic battles (Zaku Amazing vs Build Strike for example) to a more Super Robot Wars style super attack with giant flaming bird thing... but that was also my primary complaint in almost all the Try Fighter battles. I get that it references G Gundam but some suits suddenly has this magical super attack. The Gyancelot is now Thor as it can summon lighting as it's beam spam weapon. Seriously, the attack name is called Divine Wrath.

Gyan Odinson!
Quantum Burst for Shia's 00 Qan-T also became a beam spam attack (she also shouts this attack). I'm pretty sure that the 00 Qan-T did not need use Quantum Burst to launch the giant beam attack against the ELS base.

Kamehamehaaaa~
Ugh, anyway at least the Lighting Gundam and the ZZII are spamming beam attacks from their actual BFGs. That way, it's more inline with Gundam. Kamiki Burning and Winning, if you've watched what they did in BF Try, then it's pretty much status quo here.

He's about to burst a vein
The fights for the most part the same. The opening fight between Gyank and the Try Fighters could have been better fleshed out, but given how short this episode is, it's pretty understandable. And then the other fight is mostly a montage of beam spam against a bunch of suits (like the episode of Build Fighters where they storm A Baoa Qu) and the grunts get overpowered. And for some reason, there are ships (frigates, destroyers) that got shot... poor, innocent boats weren't even firing.

Also there's only 3... poor boats

This came from a single large beam that broke apart, like the arms of Bed of Chaos from Dark Souls
The penultimate fight was against the Psycho Gundam and the Psycho Gundam MK II. Which would have been nice if there was a bit of a struggle, but nah they got pawned anyway. The bit where the Psycho Gundam got stabbed in the head by the ZZII is a nice reference though.

Foouuuurrrr!!

The Final fight is a bit more of a spectacle as expected. It also feels better animated. So they're up against something that Nils created, who banned himself as he knows the secret of how these particles work. The Scramble Gundam is supposedly tuned to use the new crystal. They even mention it.

P-Bandai exclusive: Dark Scramble Gundam
But they fight anyway. The Scramble can summon crystals, creates space portals but never actually fights. The space portals leads to 3 massive super weapons: The colony laser, celestial being's planet laser, and some battleship's massive cannon. You expect this to cause tons of damage right? Nope they blocked it ala Unicorn Gundam. And somehow the Lighting Gundam and ZII made a beam massive enough to match a colony laser... yep.

How a laser that's several times larger than the suit shrinks down to be just slightly bigger than a single suit is the effect of the plavsky particles... and he just made this up

The enemy also performed post apocalyptic colony drop. Only to be destroyed by the Burning after the Winning and Lighting went through the plavsky gate (a fancy display stand) to be assimilated with the Burning Gundam itself and the Burning releasing some explosion ala Vegeta.

Hello there humans!
To be fair, he destroyed the moon once
To defeat the Scramble Gundam, the rest of the members fused with the Burning Gundam to create an even more Hyper Hyper mode. To the point where it generated an avatar of upcoming tamashii web shop exclusive Superior Kaiser.

So a bunch of suits fuse to create a Giant Gold Avatar who kills the boss on one fall swoop... sounds familiar somehow.

Anyway, in typical Kamiki Sekai fashion he punches it to death. It punched through the 3 super weapons, a bunch of plavsky crystals and the Scramble itself. End of fight. So much for it being unmatchable as a bunch of high school kids created a system that can best a newer more power system.

I did not mention any other plot related stuff. Because what's there is quite lacking and confusing. So the crystal goes out of control because of this girl from another world. Spoiler: seems to be Reiji and Aila's kid. We don't know why she's there, but they did not elaborate why Reiji's there also.

The face of evil
The crystal went out of control because of the massive negative emotions of the person attached to it... in the case of the 1st Build Fighters, the thief turned CEO, Mashita. This one is caused by a girl wanting her own Gunpla... maybe I'm underestimating her desires for it, but seems kinda shallow. Also it seems to be implied that the girl was capable of triggering crystal outbreak on her own accord, so 1st impression is she's the villain. An entire facility got covered by sharp crystals and massively damages the building because of her. It also turned the island into a massive gunpla stadium.

yeah... no one was harmed at all.
They mention in the end that no one dies, but if the Gunpla with pointy fingers that can break glass tries to kill you, then I'm pretty sure someone could have been stabbed by a crystal growing at breakneck speeds. So question is why it did what it did. She wanted her own Gundam. I thought Mashida was selling some of them in the ending credits of the 1st Build Fighters. After the montage of them teaching her how to build and do battle, they just drop of everything without explaining why she did what she did. Why didn't she just take the Gundam? Why did she have to cause a negative "dark" anomaly? Why am I overthinking a show created to sell kids products?

Stop overthinking!

There could be more. I'm not sure if there will be other episodes, so maybe it'll get fleshed out? They also show a scene in the end of older Aila. We know it's her because of the Beginning Gundam, and command Gundam displayed in the end. Could there be more? Probably...especially since we did not see the new Transient Gundam. As Wilfred Kijima was in Europe for the tournament, could it be a hint of the world tournament soon? I wanna see actual Gunpla Battles over the beam spam /super robot-fest we got.

Time is distorted in Arian. As such they had a 10 year old kid after 8 years
And yes there's the Kamiki harem... so doesn't really introduce anything new there. meh.

Anyway, I'm not sure yet if there will be more or this is just a TV special with no other things planned. It did not show an episode number, nor did I see any news so for now, I'll leave it as it is. If you want to watch Build Fighters at it's best click this and this :D
