Figure Review: Titans Return Alpha Trion with Sovereign

It'll be a quick review, as the RG Sinanju I preordered won't be here till September. So I decided to wet my feet at the new Titans Return line of Transformers: Alpha Trion with Sovereign. It'll be a short write-up for now, as I currently have a massive head ache.

Till all are one?

Alpha Trion to me was this lanky wizard-like robot from the origin of Optimus in the G1 Cartoon (No, I do not read the comics to know his incarnations). Some video games depicts him in a more muscular frame, but still quite sleek.

In this incarnation though, He's pretty squat: Broad shoulders and a very wide, square chest. It's more Orc than elf.

Orc? Elf?
Looking at it from the side, it's pretty kibble free, which is nice.

Color-wise, It's pretty much spot on as the toy is mostly molded in Red and Purple plastic, while the thighs and hands are molded in gray. The dark silver paint has a decent sheen, and the clear orange pops quite nicely against all of these. The claws are painted in shiny gun metal as well. It's very eye catching.

The chest has a nice amount of detail. The orange piece is also a button that pops out the head extensions.

Speaking of the head. It's quite angry looking. It's doesn't really exude benevolence. Coupled with the body really makes it look like this bot is ready to kick your ass rather than preach. Do inspect the pain on the eyes as some samples have turned the eyes into a full on visor.

Articulation is decent. I'm not going to compare it to the Gunpla stuff here, but overall it has most of the basics. Several things though: It has no waist swivel, no ankle tilts and the thigh joint that allows it to swing forward is scary tight. Exercise caution here.

As a transformer, of course he transforms! He has 2 modes: A spaceship no different from Gundam battle ships, and a unicorn lion.

In Ship mode, The head master Sovereign can sit inside the yellow cockpit.

It can aslo peg into the runway of the ship.

The Gun can peg into the  what is essentially the butt of Alpha Trion, while the sword can only store on the right side, as the left side has a peg that interferes with the connection.

Lion mode looks less organic lion and more like a statue of a lion. And it has a horn! A uni-lion!.

You can pose the legs a little, but looks awkward doing so. Also the sword is a tail, which just slots into the loin cloth part.

As for Sovereign, he looks like Optimus. And aside from the face of Alpha Trion on his back, is completely unpainted.

Size-wise, he's pretty chunky.

Holding the 1st Edition Prime does make me wish that the we still have the  plastics and heft of the older transformers line.

Overall, it's pretty decent. If you want an Angry looking Alpha Trion, then this is for you. Actually, this is the only choice you have for a transforming Alpha Trion save for the BotCon exclusive. Also it transforms into a unicorn lion. A Unicorn-Lion!
