With no Gundam show this week other than the rehashed Unicorn Movie turned series, I'll be instead doing a write-up on the 1/144 HG Grimgerde.
The side and back profile are clean, with no backpack to speak off. It's essentially the Masurao of the IBO universe.
The Grim comes with it's dual sword shield/sheathe combo. The sword blade is molded in that Bandai swirly gold plastic that most people hate.
The sword can mount to the shield via the pegs on the hilt. The shields themselves mount via a round peg to the forearms.
The completed suit actually has these accessories mounted all the time as part of the suit.
The sword can be hand-held or can be pegged on the shield in the opposite direction to give you more posing options.
The also comes with a rifle. A very WW2-esque rifle. The front handle can swivel so you can wield it with both hands.
You just slot it into the hands. No need to take the hand apart. One funny things is it slots just below the trigger, so when viewed up close, looks awkward as it's hand is not on the trigger.
The ammo drum can be replaced to a different direction, so you can peg it to the back skirt for storage.
Overall, pretty decent. It has all the weapons shown in the show, so there's nothing to complain about. Wish there was an open palm somewhere, but I'm nitpicking here. Oh, and you can BS a sort of flight mode due to the non-existent belly.
Though not quite as tall as the Sith lord.
What's not to like about this suit? Design-wise its pretty good. Articulation is superb, and it's quite cheap so you can modify it into whatever knight robot custom you want. Downside is it's not as substantial as the HGUC or any major HG releases, but those are 1800 yen and above. If you just want a quick simple build that looks good without any paint (or even stickers in this case) then it's very highly recommended. You can even put Graze parts on it.
He bought a green cloth.. to make these awfully edited images easier to make |
The Grimgerde is a knight-like suit piloted by chocolate man (I honestly do not remember the name). In universe description of the suit is that it's the predecessor of all the Graze models. So it's the tallgeese of the IBO universe and the suit appeared in like 2 episodes and the 2nd opening. At least it had more screen time than his Schwalbe Graze.
Aesthetics
As a Char clone, his suit is red. There's a hint of magenta in it, and it makes my camera go haywire as it tends to make it brighter than it actually is (xperia's are not known for low light).
I wish he'd just buy that camera he wants... |
Overall aesthetics are clearly medieval in inspiration. The helmet looks like a valkyrie, with the wings on its earz, as befit it's "valkyrie frame." The rest is just nice and sleek, with hints of knight-like inspirations, especially the skirt area. I love the pop-upped collar. Makes me want to put a cape on it.
The side and back profile are clean, with no backpack to speak off. It's essentially the Masurao of the IBO universe.
As mentioned in the WIP, there are a few things off, color wise. The cables in the arms and legs are grey, instead of white. The head also lacks the clear green bits. All of these issues seem to be solved in the 1/100 version.
My only gripe on the design is the belly area... or lack there of. It's just a bent spine connecting the upper and lower torso.
Overall, aesthetically one of the best in the IBO. It definitely stands out from the sea of Grazes. It's the modern knight vs the Gundam's more period correct knights, but a knight nonetheless.
Articulation
My standard articulation-wise will always be the Build Burning, as it's designed to be all around mobile with no restrictions. The Grimgerde does match it to a certain extent.
Head is on the usual doublejoint. Problem is the face guard is long, and thus get's restricted by the internal stuff around the neck/collar piece. Still it has decent range. It can tilt side to side surprisingly well.
The shoulders are a nice bit of kit. The shoulder pegs into a joint that can swivel forward.
The shoulders itself is connected via a ball-joint. Couple it with hinge in the shoulder armor and the swivel on the shoulder itself, lends it pretty good range despite the bulk.
The rest are pretty standard: double jointed elbows, bicep swivels, and in my copy of the kit, loose wrists.
Torso, or rather spine joint, allows it to swivel up and down. The waist is connected via polycap ball joint.
The thrusters can swivel up and down as well.
The side skirts are mounted to the hips via tiny plastic ball joints. Now these are squeaky... and I fear they'll break off soon, so be careful when playing around with it.
If you're not as ham-fisted as he is, then you'll have no issues |
There is minimal intrusion from the front skirt, despite it being fixed. I wish the Denial Gundam had this range.
WHAT THE HELL??! |
The rest again is pretty standard affair. The armor (or lack there off) does not obstruct any range of motion at all.
Ankle can tilt very deep. Only issue is that the small feet makes balancing difficult, and the thigh swivels are a plastic-on-plastic affair. Exercise caution, as mine squeaks...
Overall, it has very good range. It can pull-off the one pose the Build/Try Burning struggles...
Obligatory Iron Man pose |
One thing to note though when handling the kit. Since it's hollow, it does feel a bit flimsy and is incredibly light. If you're used to the heft of the HGUC line, this may be a bit of a shock (would assume all IBO kits under 1000 yen are the same).

Size Comparison
The Grim is a pretty tall suit. You can see below that it matches the Justices elongated sensor.Though not quite as tall as the Sith lord.
