Gunpla Review: HGBF Gundam Tryon 3

Something I have been highly anticipating as far as Build Fighters Try kits are concerned, we're gonna take a look at Gundam Tryon 3.

A Super Robot needs it's lens flares

Tryon 3 is Super Robot embodied. It's made up of 3 mechanoids: Riku Tryon (the lion), Sora Tryon (the bird) and Umi Tryon (the sting ray). And they combine in a sequence worthy of Obari (who actually animated the combination sequence).

As much as I love real robots, nothing can beat a hot blooded super robot combination sequence!

Aesthetics

Tryon 3 is based of the ZZ Gundam, right down to the 3 components merging together to form the actual suit. In kit form the colors are bright and brash, which is very 70s, 80s super robot. It's very reminiscence of Daitarn 3, especially the head crest plus, Raijin-Oh for the theme, and GaoGaiGar with the lion chest.

The kit itself is a remold of the 2010 HGUC ZZ Gundam. The Box is actually pretty big.  The kit colors are mostly accurate. The only glaring color that needs to be filled in is on the bird head (more on that on the accessories). It comes with stickers for those anyway.

The lion dominates the chest. Side profile is thick, with the lion body serving as the backpack. It isn't as chunky overall as the animation counterpart, but that's already expected from the entire HGBF line. The shins are thinner than what I would have liked. Same goes for the arms.

The cannons are located too far back for my liking, and the shoulders too close together.

Wow... everyone's a critic eh?
The details on the kit itself are clean and crisp. Very few visible seam lines are actually present in the kit.

Overall, it's not that bad. It's based on a real robot kit after all, so expecting super robot proportions should be thrown out the window.

After that lashing, you claim it's not bad??
The rear could use a bit more color, but no one looks at that anyway.

He resisted the urge to flip the lion tail down 'cause he's soooo matuuure

Now, I'm sure you have noticed that the kit is snapped together with no stickers and panel lining, unlike the previous kits I've shown in this blog. That's because I'm planning on painting the guy into metallic colors. Also to note on the build process, the thing has tons of bad nubs. They are visible and they are large and placed in awkward places.

Articulation

Now, super robots tend to be... well chunky and brick like (at least the older ones are). But this is based on a real robot, so it should fare pretty well right?

It's got a double jointed neck, which has good range. A ball jointed waist. Ball joints on the wrist, just over 90 elbows, bicep swivels and the shoulders can go up as far as what the pic below shows.

you're actually using the pic to describe stuff???
Now onto the disappointing part. The hips are balljointed, and outward movement is severely restricted by the side skirt. I'm sure the HGUC ZZ Gundam suffered the same, but this thing is supposed to be able to kick stuff. Because of that, it can't look dynamic, despite having a nice ankle tilts, 90 degree knees and thigh swivels.

That's how much outward hip movement you get
The poses you can get this guy are limited. To get a bit more outward movement (or the illusion of), you have to swivel the thighs inward, which is also shown in the instruction sheet. it looks awkward at best. I guess I was expecting too much.

Weapons and Extras

Being a super robot, most of it's weapons are on the suit itself.

1st, the "Arm Booster", which is basically Mazinger (and all SRW OG super robot) rocket punch.

roketoo paaanchiii

The "Wing shield", which also doubles as it's "Heat Wing".

heeeetooo wingggg
"Liger Glare", which comes from the lion eyes, ala Gaiking and "Choho Pressure", which comes from it's mouth.

ligaaaa glaaaaaare

Since it's ZZ based, it comes with it's Hyper Mega Cannon on it's forehead.

Nope. High Mega Cannon is real robot shiz
"Boomerang Stagger", which is basically the v-fin used as a throwing weapon.

"Raptor Breaker", which is a crushing kick delivered with Sora Tryon's talons.

Jaaaarvisssuuu
and last, "Double Cannonade."

sounds like a refreshing drink
So that's for the built in stuff (i.e. use your imagination weapons). Onto the hand held weapons.

1st the hyper beam saber stored at the back along with the cannons.

It accepts 1/100 beam sabers.

And of course, the "Hyper Minovsky Chohoken", which is a gigantic beam sword. The hilt is the bird head, while the handle is the ray tail. You also need the beam saber handles for it.

I prefer assembling the hilt first, since the feather bits are fiddly. Also, I would recommend plugging in the gripping hand separately.

chooo hooo
And as expected, the sword is too heavy for him to hold. He does not have enough pose ability to actually copy the box art.
kennnnnnn
Just to give you an idea on the size, here is the completed sword next to the suit.

Zengar would be proud!
That's all for the accessories... but wait! It can actually separate into it's individual mechanoids via partsforming. You need the bits shown below, which are the thrusters, bird wings, and the Umi Tryon head. Won't bother showing how, as it is very fiddly.
comes with a nice container too
For Riku, just unplug the lion head (along with the red bit) and the backpack and swap the little hinges to the top.

And you end up with a derpy looking lion.

biiig heaaadd

For Umi, you'll need the Umi head, the rest of the ZZ body (minus the head) and the arms.

You'll get my favorite of the three.

Sora requires you to pretty much disassemble the entire leg. You also don't need the feet.

And you'll get an awkward looking bird...

it has no... tai feathers, nor a body
And you end up with this lot.

Action base sold separately
And a bunch of leftover robot bits.
lose one and it over
So there you go. You can pose all three of them into separate components, but it's a huge PITA. You also get enough parts to color swap the thighs and the arms, and parts to create the core fighter (which I did not bother with).

Size Comparison

ZZ is a pretty big suit. He's actually taller than the UC grunt suits.

I would say, closer to the Nu Gundam in size. Here's next to an MG Zaku.

Sayy, can I have some of your shin mass?

Summary

Try not to expecting too much from this kit. As awesome as it looks in the show, the actual kit kinda disappoints. On the plus side, it's colors are fairly accurate, and has a Giant Freakin' Sword. On the downside, the nubs are bad, it's not very poseable, it's proportionally off, partsforming is very fiddly and has trouble holding the giant freakin' sword. This is the only way to get a Tryon 3 so far. I doubt we'll get an MG, nor a Robot Damashii. If you like the Tryon 3, well, you have no choice. But if you're just looking to a casual build, look elsewhere as there are much better kits out there.

legs need to be spread farther
Zankantou
TRYZAN!!! *insert explosion and a giant G
