Gunpla Review: 1/144 RG Tallgeese 1 ver. EW

The Eagle has landed! I'm not a fan of the execution of the show and the plot really went over my head back when I was a kid. But when it comes to cool antagonist non-Gundams, the Tallgeese is among my favorites. It's a Spartan with a giant gun after all. And now we have a super detailed version of it in a manageable scale! Here's a review on the RG Tallgeese.

plot goes over his head: He was not a very bright kid...

When the RG Tallgeese (and Leos) were announced, I immediately looked for a local hobby shop's preorder link. I pre-ordered this back in Feb and the 5 month wait felt like forever! I would have preferred a HG to be honest as a long build is something I've grown tired off after 2 decades of kit building.

Aesthetics

Tallgeese is one of those suits that evokes the feeling of 90s top gun. I can't quite put my finger on it but when I see Tallgeese 1, it reminds me of F14s.

typical rose tinted 90s nostalgia
The EW design tweaks the colors from a cool, albeit basic white with black trim to an almost all white suit with yellow trim. The black is now an off white color. 90s nostalgia tells me that I like the black trim better than this almost all white one.

Hey! stop being so self aware!
The modern RG seems to have been throwing away the original's mechanical look. Gone are the abundance of surface details, a bazzilion color parts separation and instead, we get a mostly smooth looking kit. There are decent mechanical details exposed here and there to break it down a bit, but for the most part, it's essentially a scaled down MG. It's not a bad thing, but I really prefer my RGs to look like an RG, and not a slightly better HG.

old fart's stubborn and refuses to accept change

The kit itself is actually good. The build is nice and easy and there are very few small parts and I never felt tired building this as compared to other real grades (looking at you Sinanju). As an RG, parts separation is of course, excellent. The only sticker I used here is the eyes. The visor is weird in that it's made out of the same material the beam sabers are made of, so I you want to paint it clear blue, it'll probably look cloudy.

as cloudy as his eyes under his thick glasses
Speaking of material, if you notice there's some sheen on most of the kit. The white is glossier than normal white, but not to the same degree as RG Sinanju or any gloss-injection kit. Glossy plastics are awful since they leave ugly nip marks, but since it's white, it tends to blend in pretty well. Bandai made a half-hearted attempt to under-gate the white but ends up giving up on this approach as half the parts are not only not under-gated, but features gigantic nubs.

Keep it clean if you want to make sure the nubs don't stand out.

Also, the only pre-built frame parts you get are the arms and the legs. and even then it's pretty basic. It's better than re-purposing the old RG Wing Zero frame I suppose as it won't result in a floppy mess like older RGs.

Overall though, it's a very good looking kit. The only negative I can think of while building this is the half-hearted attempt on under-gating the kit. It's not as fiddly as the old RGs as the inner frame is relegated to the arms and legs. It does need all the decals it can get as without it, it just looks like a decently painted HG.

Articulation

As cool looking as it is, underneath that is still a Leo. The Leo is actually a very scaled and stripped down version of the Tallgeese. Given that the Tallgeese is more armored, it'll be more limited right?

The head has decent range. The head design overall limits the range but it's RG joints makes it better than what it could have.

The head is on a ball joint, but the base of the neck is in a limited hinge. You can see that slight movement when you look at the collar piece.

The shoulder armor is 3 layers deep but is only connected to the shoulder using a single swivel band in the middle of the shoulder. It can therefore swivel up and down. At least it's very tight as it'll hold the weapons latar.

The shoulder joint can extend from the torso a little.

Unlike RGs of yore, it only pulls out, which is good for holding the heavy weapons. The "backpack" hinges also sprout from the kit's underarms.

The shoulder can only move up averagely. the shoulder armor limits it a bit, even after you pull the shoulders all the way out. You then get the standard bicep swivel and wrist joint. Notice the armor separation on the elbow as well.

NOTICE IT!!!
Continuing with the upper torso, there's a latch at the back to lock the torso hinge in place. This limits the waist to just an ab crunch but in exchange, it doesn't flop about like a fish.

The waist itself is just a peg. It's tight and a little small so be careful moving it around. The skits limits the waist rotation.

Still continuing from the upper torso, the booster pods are very articulated. Originally, these pods are mounted at the back of the shoulder armor. While they can fudge it in the animation, it does not translate well in real life as they will never be symmetrically positioned.

While it doesn't make physical sense to have 2 powerful boosters mounted using tiny arms on a heavy suit, it does make posing it much much easier. It can easily get out of the way when you move the arms around.

It features the same thruster opening gimmick as the MG.

The thruster with the wing can slide down to fully engage the thruster pod.

One extra feature is the additional thruster at the base of the pod. You can open up the base and slide the inner assembly down. Again physically speaking, that means these thrusters are just mounted on what is essentially a hollow frame with not place for fuel or anything mechanical.

physics on an anime with Giant robots piloted by immortal kids... right

The thrusters have nice details though.

Moving onto the legs, the thigh pods are mounted the same as the MG. The base skirt is on a ball joint, the pod is mounted to the side skirt via a ball joint and the pod is connected to the thighs via a barbell joint.

Here's a better view.

If you choose to not use the thigh connection, you can flip it up to hide it within the thigh pod.

Like all RGs, there's a crotch swivel that allows the hips to move front and back. Issue I have is there are no locks and it's quite loose in mine. So when you move the thighs up, it'll move this joint 1st before actually moving on he actual hip joint.

The thigh pod, even when connected, does not hinder articulation.

Thigh pod is connected here FYI
The knee joint features the same armor separation as the elbow.

The ankles are tight, and right fully so. The Tallgeese has a very human male anatomy where the thighs are big, shins are thinner and has some tiny feet. It does have all the joints it needs. The ankles tilt without moving the circle joint thingy.

Since the Tallgeese is rarely seen running, I'm ok with the range of the legs.

But wait, there's more! Like the MG ,the back skirt armor can move, but more importantly, it houses 2 more thrusters.

these buns ain't for show
There's still more! The thigh pods can oven up a little. It doesn't reveal anything so no clue why this was done other than to look cool.

And there's still 1 more!! It's a questionable articulation point... but if you'd read this far, notice I did not mention anything about the front skirt. The front skit is just one solid chunk. But you can move this up and in doing so, extends the crotch thruster a little bit...

he's a show-er
All those thrusters makes the thruster opening stock footage shots of this kit all the more epic looking.

Back to the suit. Overall, it's a nicely articulated kit. Most joints are solid and tight, and the locking torso is probably a lesson learned from the MG. I also forgot to show the opening cockpit, but there's really nothing inside there. One thing you need to take note of is standing it up with it's tiny feet isn't very stable. The backpack is heavy so you need to fiddle around with it to make sure it stands. But this isn't a kit made for standing. With all the boosters, it's meant to be displayed in flight.

Weapons and Extras

The thrusters gimmicks is in itself. But Tallgeese isn't complete without it's signature weapons.

But first, alternate hands. You get a pair of open palms, a pair of holding things hands and one hand that's slightly pointing forward for beam saber poking action.

Now the Dober Gun. It's huge and it's parts separation is impressive.

The gun's main handle is on a very small ball joint. The piece where it's mounted can swivel so the kit can hold it without looking awkward. The ball joint on the handle is scary small so do be careful when making the Tallgeese hold it. The front handle can swivel, but makes no sense as the Tallgeese can't reach it.

The ammo pack at the back can be removed, but is a bit loose.

One feature inherited from the MG is that the barrel can retract. If you retract it back enough, it will expose a mechanism on the back and lower the "hammer" of the gun. There's no spring though unlike the MG so it doesn't spring back by itself.

The other accessory is the shield. It's round and shiny. You do not get the Animation version eagle sticker though.

The backside of the shield is nicely detailed. The beam saber mounts can swivel and the handle can swing down to be heald by the kit.

ewww Human handssssss
The beam sabre can be removed. You get 2 pairs of beams. The pink one and a clear one. The clear one contains the parts used as clear parts for the visor and the dober gun scope.

You also get the arms that will mount these weapons to the shoulders of the kit. IT has several swivels and ball joints to make it easier for the kit to hold.

The left one mounts on the hole of the shield.

The right one mounts to the right side of the rifle.

The flaps underneath the tips of the shoulders can be opened to expose a peg hole.

Once plugged in, you now have the completed Tallgeese.

One last accessory is the very tiny Zechs figure. For once I have all the accessories of said kit...

Oh and one last thing! I mentioned that the underneath the Tallgeese is a souped up Leo. Well you can remove the "Mask" to reveal the Leo head. You get a sticker for the monoeye for that too. All it needs is a gripping hand so you can have Tallgeese grip it's mask like in the anime.

Oh and you get an action base connector that slides on a "rail" on the crotch.
You're overused Steve Jobs joke is really annoying now

One of the most annoying thing about the weapons is obviously the gun. Specifically holding the gun. The joins are very many but it's still very limited. What I do think of the pose 1st, then preposition all the armature joints so that the handle area is near the wrist, and fudge with it a bit more to get it mounted. If you're a sane man, just unpeg the armature off the side of the gun and pose as you want.

Overall, the selection is pretty standard. You get all the thruster gimmicks, along with it's standard weapons layout. It's missing the Leo machine gun it used in the opening but it's not a loss. I wish they could have given more joints on the gun and shield armatures but you can just unplug it anyway. In the end, I don't feel like it needs more to do what it needs to do.

Size Comparison

The Tallgeese is pretty tall (kek) compared to the other wing suits. At 17.4 meters, it's 1 meter and a half taller vs the standard 16 meter wing suits. As such this kit is taller than most of the Wing kits out now.

Here it is next to it's team mate (initially), the new HG Leo.

Since I don't have a HG Wing Gundam, here it is next to Wing Zero.

And a comparison to the older RG Wing Zero Custom. Aside from the stickers, notice how much more busy the Wing Zero looks with it's panel lines.

Summary

RGs have evolved in more than one way. It used to be all about mechanical "real" world detail and it's inner frame. Now we get these smoothed out kits with the inner frame being relegated to arms and legs. The latter I don't mind since this makes the kits solid, but the loss of surface detail  I don't like. The upcoming RG Sazabi seems to be going back to the original RG chock full of details core but until it's released, we won't know. This Tallgeese in itself, is a very good kit. It's surprisingly easy to build and is very solid. The poses it can do, specifically with it's gun, is extremely limited due to the design of it. The RG has work arounds for it, but is still limited. I would recommend the kit since it's solid and pretty, but not if you come in expecting an RG aesthetic, you might end up disappointed.

Good:
- solid for an RG
- ease of build. Nothing annoying at all and no loose bits while assemble
- it looks nice

Bad:
- holding it's gun is still a chore thus limiting posing options
- I need that giant eagle decal... it only has that EW eagle decal
- subjective but I wish it looked more... RG-ish
